Before reaching the status of having bad credit or before letting your credit rating get any worse, it is important to know how having bad credit will affect you. Not knowing how your credit affects you can lead you down the path of wrong decisions and may leave your financial situation with a much less than perfect credit rating.

Those with a bad credit rating will more likely pay higher interest rates on loans and credit cards. Financial Institutions view those with bad credit as risky and more likely to not pay back what they charge or borrow. Even those automobile lots that advertise that they will not check your credit or that they do not care that you have bad credit will charge extremely high interest rates to cover the risk.

When you apply for a loan or credit card, having bad credit will most often return a denied status preventing you from getting the money you need. Landlords will very often ask to check your credit before they allow you to rent from them. If your credit is good, landlords feel more comfortable about letting you rent from them knowing that you have a good credit history of repaying what you owe. If you have bad credit, you could be prevented from renting a place to live.

When you do have a place to live and need utilities such as lights, water and cable service, having bad credit makes getting these more difficult. Utility companies consider those with bad credit a high risk for not paying or not paying on time.

Most often than none, employers will check your credit before offering you a job. This is extremely true if you are applying for any position that deals with money or financial matters. Having bad credit may give the impression that you are not reliable and dependable. Also, some companies may use the fact that those with bad credit are more likely to be dishonest with their employer. In other words, you may be denied employment if you have bad credit.

When getting auto insurance a bad credit rating may cause you to pay higher premiums to get coverage. It is assumed that those with bad credit will file more claims for money, therefore posing a greater risk to the insurance company.
